I notice the sparkling ocean winking at me and consider how many people *dream* of gazing upon the Pacific

As I round the orchard and head up the slope towards our rental home, I remember spending most of 2025 huffing and puffing — struggling to breathe as I walked this incline, because severe anemia and blood loss were starving my body of oxygen

Today I can breathe
And I notice how pleasant it is to take a walk and be able to just… breathe

Not plagued with wondering
“What’s wrong with me?”
Or, “When will I feel better?”

Here I am, now… better
I can breathe again

And even if this only lasts for today
Even if death and destruction come knocking on my door again, as it surely will in my lifetime — For today, I will cherish being able to breath

Something the game of POKER has taught me that I wish I’d known in college 🎓 and what I spoke about at Harvard University this week:

You can do everything right — make the RIGHT read, the mathematically CORRECT play, the SMART decision — and still LOSE.

Ask yourself: What kind of loser are you willing to be?

Life will deal you plenty of blows. Plans fall apart. Deals fall through. People walk away. You can’t possibly prepare for every failure, heartbreak, or disappointment.

My mindset used to be reactive:
“This isn’t fair. Why is this happening to me?!” I looked for where I could place the blame.

But after twenty messy, unpredictable years at the poker table, I’ve learned to become PROACTIVE when facing an “unfair” or negative outcome.

Now I step back and ask:
•What led to this result?
•What flaw was in MY process?
•What can I learn from this?

Because the truth is: we all lose. The question is — will you be the kind of loser who blames bad luck, or the kind who studies their decisions and plays smarter next time?

THIS is where real calibration happens: when you stop defending your choices and start studying them. THIS is how we take control in an uncertain and chaotic world.

Because it’s not winning that turns you into a winning player — it’s asking sharper questions after a loss.

When I first read this, it stopped me in my tracks. Wait… what? We’re taught to associate success with money, status, recognition.

But what if THIS 👆🏽is the real goal?

The calmest person in the room usually has the clearest EDGE—whether in the boardroom, at home with spouse & kids, mid-crisis… or in a high stakes poker game.

Easier said than done.

At the poker table, I don’t always win the hand. But if I can look back and identify having stayed calm, unbiased, and emotionally even through complexity, chaos or pressure… I know I played the game well.

More importantly, I know I’m building the habits that lead to long-term wins. On and off the felt.

(Sound on) Lately I’ve been avoiding looking back on photos of my Palisades home before it was destroyed in the California fires, although the images of that life are so beautiful.

• The bright vibrant colors of our coastal garden
• Ocean views and sunsets that never bored
• Cozy spots I was most comfortable
• A house full of my favorite things; my life’s collection
• And so, so many delightful memories

That life feels so close, yet another lifetime ago.

I’ve had many ideas for videos I want to put together, to celebrate (and mourn) that life. I considered sharing all the people and celebrations that filled my home. Conversly, I imagined a compare/contrast with before and after images.

But @mirandalambert’s song, “The House That Built Me” creatively took over and led to this… walking up, amidst the ruin, to my front door. In my mind’s eye, not the destruction I see in front of me, but the peaceful haven I once knew. Four walls that housed a blessed life — the colors, the moments and the memories live on.

Quick trip to Washington D.C. to speak at a summit for an aerospace defense company 🤓 and challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone - in a unique way:

After an intense week of speaker prep, little sleep and cross country travel, the morning after my keynote (day of my return flight) I was depleted. What I WANTED to do was sleep-in, go to airport, get home… minimal exertion.

But, the only time I had been to D.C. was around 14yrs old, with family, on one of those… ya know, LET’S SEE ALLLLL the educational sights, statutes, museums, historic sh**, and walk 50,000 bajillion miles around the city until the blisters render you paralyzed (not every teenage girl’s dream trip).

With exactly a 3hr window before needing to be at the airport, I sat on my hotel bed, humming and hawing over the effort it would take to Uber into the city and then drag my luggage around (in 85°/29° weather), in order to see a some historic monuments.

I didn’t know how close an Uber could drop me off to the sites I wanted to see. Didn’t pack appropriate walking shoes. Didn’t know if there’d be a lot of stairs with luggage in-tow. And honestly, my ego didn’t want people looking at the weird girl who brought her suitcase and two large bags to go sightseeing. What would they think? I was lost? Homeless? Dumb?

Fear of the uncertain held me back. How often do “what-ifs” inform YOUR own decision-making?

I WANTED to be lazy, but I CHALLENGED myself to value the opportunity I was given and embrace the present. “Who knows if I’ll ever be back here again. Do not take this moment for granted. So what if it takes some extra effort and is inconvenient?”

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable… and uncertain.

I made a conscious choice to step out of my comfy zone and CARPE DIEM D.C. - baggage, ballet flats, BO and all!
